National Route 1 of the National Cycle Network is a long distance route
between Dover and John o'Groats and also a part of the North Sea Route.
In the north east the route is open between Staithes and Berwick-upon-Tweed via Redcar,
Stockton-on-Tees, Wingate, Seaham, Sunderland, South Shields and Whitley Bay and
includes several traffic-free disused railway paths.
