I try and stick to the cycle tracks wherever possible, Redcar & Cleveland Council have made a great start on cycle tracks, although there is a long way to go. I look after a section of cycle track on the Sustrans NCN 1 from Saltburn to Marske, collecting litter, trimming hedges and maintaining the route signs, alongside the running of the Marske by the sea website". The NCN1 runs from Dover to John O' Groats.
Richard was a civil engineer working for companies like Taylor Woodrow, he helped build the steel works at Redcar where they poured concrete none stop for weeks to build the foundations for the Blast Furnace. Richard also rebuilt the Redcar sea wall back in 1953 after the great storm (Redcar Sea wall is soon to be completely rebuilt). Latterly he was the site manager for Keble Homes.
Richard commented. "Its hard to believe I have been retired so many years, I keep myself very busy, I love my Apple
Mac computer and enjoy building websites and reading books on my iPad which is so lovely on the eyes as I lay in bed with my cats on my knee.

Richard Mann aged 80 decided on his birthday that running his car after 63 years behind the wheel was getting too expensive.
With the price of petrol being so expensive he has joined the Sustrans Redcar Rangers, the sustainable transport cycle track building group as a volunteer
and bought an electrically assisted bike  for his day to day commuting and fitness activity.
His first car was a BMW with a V6 engine when petrol was less than 50p a gallon
, now at £6.00 a gallon Richard has called it a day.
Commenting "It's amazing how quickly you can get to places on a bike and you have no trouble parking.
